The SmartFlow Urine Diverter is the only composting toilet diverter on the market designed specifically for use with a simple 1-gallon water jug. The stand-alone urine collector snaps snugly into the top of any standard 1-gallon jug. Another unique and extremely useful feature is the urine level indicator. When the float-based indicator sphere rises, it is time to dump the urine container. No need for frequent lifts to see where the level is! Also included is an EUD (External Urine Diverter) Adaptor which shunts the urine outside the toilet and into a holding tank, larger portable container, or drain field. If you decide to use the EUD option, you will first need to cut and remove the 1/8″ aluminum tube and attached float. Then you will be able to screw on a diverting hose/ regular water hose onto the bottom of the white collector. Both methods require BOTH the black diverter AND the white collector which fits underneath it.
The SmartFlow system is easy to install and operate. It is easily adapted to a variety of DIY homemade composting toilets. The white collecting funnel snaps securely into any standard 1-gallon water/milk jug and requires no other attachment to hold it in place atop the jug. As you can see in the DIY toilet photo examples above, there are 2 options you have to mount the black urine diverter piece: It can be attached to 1. the underside of your toilet seat or 2. underneath the hinged wooden platform supporting your toilet seat. The minimum height requirement is 16″ between the floor of the toilet box and the underside of the toilet seat. Any height over 16″ is easy to accommodate: simply add an extra thickness of wood or similar base material underneath the 1-gallon jug. Dimensions of Black Diverter: 4.5″ H x 11″ W x 6″ D. Dimensions of White Collector Funnel: 3″ Diameter x 1.5″ H. Included in sale are SmartFlow instructions, stainless steel mounting screws, and a swivel EUD hose adapter with 5/8″ barb size. *****A SQUARE solids bucket will work much better that a standard 5-gallon ROUND bucket with the SmartFlow because it allows more room for the 1-gallon urine container in front. I recommend you purchase a Sterilite 7.5 Gallon Waste Container/ Trash Bin (J Base) from your local Walmart and trim off 1-2 inches all around the top. In the front, trim an additional 3 inches off where the diverter is. This will allow the diverter to overlap the front of the solids bin by an inch and still have room for the gallon urine container.
*****One final important note: Avoid purchasing any of the diverter types where the posterior portion does not extend straight across, from side to side. These types greatly complicate your DIY toilet design since there will be a LARGE TRIANGULAR GAP remaining on both the right and left side, between the diverter, toilet seat, and solids bag.
